Cortisol - PM

The PM cortisol serum test is used to detect abnormal levels of cortisol production. It is often conducted in conjunction with an AM cortisol serum test and an ACTH test to help diagnose conditions related to the adrenal and pituitary glands, such as Addison's Disease, Cushing's Syndrome, Adrenocortical Insufficiency, and Hypersecretion.

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland and is known as the major adrenal glucocorticoid steroid hormone. It is controlled by feedback mechanisms from the pituitary ACTH and the hypothalamus. There are multiple causes of low cortisol, including pituitary damage or failure, metabolic errors, or destruction of the adrenal gland. High cortisol levels can be caused by adrenal adenomas, overproduction of ACTH by the pituitary, or production of ACTH by a tumor. The diagnosis of hypoadrenalism usually requires confirmation with an ACTH stimulation test due to the circadian rhythms of cortisol and other factors.
